After being an active member in school with the usual choirs and shows I did nothing else musical until I met Ali in my twenty’s.
Ali asked me to join a guitar trio as one of the singers had decided to take a year off to travel round the world! We had a busy year singing at many concerts in and around the Bristol area and at the end of the year we became a quartet! At one of the concerts being hosted by a choir in Keynsham there were 2 members from Avonbelles in the audience who accosted us and told us all about Barbershop and persuaded us to attend one of their rehearsals and from that point on I was hooked.
I joined Avonbelles singing Lead then later moved to the tenor section. I took a few years away from barbershop and when I returned I was invited to sing tenor in a quartet that Ali was in as the current tenor was moving away, but somehow ended up singing bass! Our finest hour during this time was appearing and singing on the Generation Game as the surprise guest to our baritone who was competing in the show (and won!).
My quartet life was non-existent after the lead in the quartet decided to give up singing. It stayed that way until Linda relocated to the West Country and became MD of GWC and asked me if I’d like to sing in a quartet and Havoc was formed as a ‘singing for fun’ quartet with strict instructions that we would never compete.
In 2004 GWC were going to Dublin to compete in IABS and as Linda and Jo were going, Ali and I were asked if we’d like to join them just to watch and then it was suggested as we were there we might as well enter Havoc – but just for fun! Imagine our absolute delight and disbelief when we won the gold medal.
This left us with a dilemma, but we were persuaded by the LABBS chairmen (Jean Olman) to join LABBS and at our first convention in 2005 we won the bronze medal, in 2006 we won silver and of course in 2007 we won gold, exceeding all our expectations and wildest dreams!
