For as long as I can remember I have always been singing, either solos or duets with my Sisters and my Mum, around the piano at home or at local concerts and eisteddfods (anything to get out of having to practise the piano!). I was also in the school choir and orchestra playing the recorder and flute. My Mum and I have also played duets together at concerts and weddings, my Mum on piano, me on flute.
Donna and I have been singing together for a number of years in a variety of groups from folk to sea shanties, singing at some amazing venues across country.
We first got to hear Barbershop in 1989, when Donna & I were invited to go along to an Avonbelles rehearsal and I soon joined the baritone section. I was then asked by my baritone section leader if I’d like to join a mixed group ‘City Lights, where I enjoyed many happy years singing alto at various venues, in concerts, weddings and competitions.
I also sang with an a cappella group ‘’Classic Group Company’ and our claim to fame was singing on the TV programme ‘ Casualty’.
As I still had a few evenings free I started singing in a quartet with three other baritones and a bass!
After leaving The Avonbelles I helped in starting up a new chorus - Fascinating Rhythm, where I am the Tenor Section Leader and Chorus Manager.
With all the singing and music that I have been involved with, my first love is singing in a quartet. So when Linda heard that the lead in my quartet had decided to hang up her pitch pipe, I was thrilled to be asked to join her …. and Havoc was formed.
During the day I work in admin at the University of the West of England, (UWE) Bristol. Pete (from QED & also at UWE) has started up a lunchtime barbershop group for students and staff…so far we have 20 members!
To Linda, Donna and Jo … Thank you for allowing me to organise you with spreadsheets, sleepovers(!), for your friendship and for helping me to achieve the one thing I never thought possible!
